Washer dryers Buying Guide
Washer dryers Buying Guide
How do you live without a washer dryer? Simply put, you can’t. So, choosing the right one is no small task. Thankfully, our handy buying guide will help you choose between freestanding or integrated, and help you pick out which features or wash programmes you’re after.
Tight on space? A washer dryer rolls a washing machine and a tumble dryer into one – making it a great choice if you don’t have much room to play with. You’ve now got two different sets of features to think about. So to help, we’ve compiled this guide to cut through the jargon and show you exactly what to look for.
Washer Dryer
Freestanding washer dryers
If you don’t want your washer dryer to live in a cabinet or cupboard, a freestanding one is for you. Since they stand on their own, you can fit one pretty much anywhere there’s a connection, letting you stack it, store it under a counter or just pop it in free space. It also means they’re much easier to move from one spot to another. Plus, freestanding washer dryers vary in size a lot more than integrated ones, so there’s a bit more choice.
Integrated washer dryers
Want a washer dryer you can easily hide away? Integrated or built-in washer dryers are designed to slot in their own cupboard or under-counter space so that they stay out of sight. That’s why most will be built to fit standard cabinet sizes - but it’s still important to measure up carefully!
Washer dryer capacity
Both are measured based on how many kgs of washing they can wash or dry in one go. Washing capacities range from around 6-12kg, while dryer capacities go from 4 to 7kg.
How to measure for a new washer dryer
Before you start the search for a new washer dryer, it’s really important to measure the area you want your washer dryer to go. This’ll help you narrow down your options and make sure you don’t get your heart set on a model that just won’t fit!
Grab your tape measure and jot down the height, width and depth of your space. Now subtract 5cm from the width and 15cm from the depth. That allows enough of a gap for your machine to be properly ventilated – giving you the ideal washer dryer measurements. Oh, and don’t forget to check you’ve got enough room to open your machine door to load and unload your washing.
Energy rating
Washer dryers have two energy ratings. A-G for the washing cycle, and then D-F when the dryer is involved (and it’s the drying rating that will be displayed as the main energy rating). So, look for energy efficiency when you’re picking out your washer dryer. An A-rated washer dryer is good for the planet and for cutting your energy bills!
Spin speed
Want to know how fast your washer dryer drum rotates during a cycle? Check the spin speed! They range from about 1200 to 1600rpm. And a higher rpm will make your clothes dry faster, spinning the moisture out your clothes. But the best spin speed isn’t always the fastest. Wool and some synthetics need a slower spin speed compared to cotton - so it’s just about what materials you wash most often.
Eco-friendliness
If you want an eco washer dryer that’s kinder to the planet, there are a few things to check for. One is the energy rating we talked about before. Another is whether it has a dedicated eco mode – these can use up to 60% less energy, for a greener clean.
Steam cleaning
A steam cleaning washer dryer is brilliant for getting rid of allergens, bacteria and tough stains. That’s because adding steam to the drum relaxes clothing fibres, so that water and detergent can get at the stain much more easily. It also makes ironing your clothes a doddle.
Quiet performance
No-one wants a racket while they’re washing their things - especially if you’re WFH! You can check how quiet a washer dryer is by looking at its average noise level in dB. As a guide, anything below 75dB is considered particularly quiet.
Auto dosing
With in auto dosing machine, you fill up a special detergent compartment ahead of time. Then when it’s time to do your wash, the machine automatically adds just the right amount of detergent for your wash load.
Add to the wash
Everyone knows that feeling – you’ve put the wash on only to then find that lost sock. A pause cycle button or add to wash, function lets you add those forgotten bits to the wash. Now there’s no need to wait until the next day!
Self-cleaning
To keep your washer dryer working at its best, it’s a good idea to give the drum a good clean every now and then. That’s why some machines have a self-cleaning cycle to remove softener, detergent and dirt build-ups in the drum.
Enhanced cleaning
Spilling wine, coffee or anything else doesn’t have to be the end of your favourite outfit! Many machines now come with special programs. Some use steam to tackle the problem while others adjust the soaking time, temperature or drum action.
Sensor guided wash
Get rid of the guesswork! These washer dryers have built-in sensors that automatically adjust the water, heat and detergent amount depending on your laundry load. Plus, since you’re never using more energy or water than you need, it can help with the bills too.
Smart-connected
Need a helping hand on laundry day? A smart-connected washing machine will definitely lighten the load. They can be connected to a Wi-Fi network and controlled from an app on your phone or tablet. You'll find this nifty feature on machines from all your favourite brands, including Candy, Hoover, Samsung, Miele and more. Our handy guide will take you through what a smart washing machine is, and all the benefits of having one.
Super quiet
Super quiet washing machines are fantastic for making laundry nights more peaceful – perfect if you have an open plan living space or little ones who are sensitive to sound. Unlike normal motors these models use frictionless magnets instead of noisy brushes to power the machine. This also helps to make your washing machine more energy efficient and longer-lasting.
Sensor controlled wash
Sensor controlled wash is a super clever feature that tailors the cycle to the laundry load. There’re different kinds of sensors, with some being able to work out how much water and energy to use based on the weight of the load. Some sensors even detect the type of material and adjust the wash to match – no harsh cycles shrinking your woolly jumper this time. You can say goodbye to laundry detergent confusion too. There’re sensors that know how much to add, or can pick up on excess detergent and extend the rinse cycle to make sure it’s fully removed – that’ll help to keep skin irritations at bay.
Automatic detergent dosing
When it comes to pouring laundry detergent, you’re either a meticulous measurer or a free-spirited guesser. Whichever one you identify as, automatic detergent dosing is here to make everyone’s life easier. Sensors will weigh clothes once they’re in the drum, and measure how dirty they are. They’ll then work out the perfect amount of detergent and conditioner for your laundry, before dispensing it. This means you’ll never use too much or too little again, you’ll save money and you’ll enjoy softer, cleaner outfits. Honestly, what’s not to love?
Quick wash
A quick wash is the perfect setting when you need to do a spot of last-minute laundry. These quick wash programmes typically tend to be 30 minutes; however, some models can wash a load in as little as 15 minutes. To get the best from a quick wash cycle, only use them for small loads or slightly dirty items.
Add extra clothes
Found a stray sock on the floor after a wash has already started? Not to worry, some models will let you pause a program after it’s begun so you can add any items that have been accidentally left behind.
Allergy care
If you or anyone in your house has sensitive skin or allergies, the anti-allergic programme will become one of your favourite features. By using extra rinses at the end of wash it removes all traces of dust, pollen and pet fur – so you can breathe easy and feel comfortable in your freshly washed clothing and bedding.
Stain removal
Accidents happen, but with stain removal technology, those little spills and mishaps will easily be taken care of. This clever tech usually adjusts the temperature and drum movements to tackle common stains like mud and food, so your favourite outfits will be back to their best in no time.
Steam clean
Some washing machines use the power of steam to take care of your clothes. The hot temperatures from the steam gets rid of bacteria and freshens up your clothes. Plus, it helps stop creases, so you’ll have less ironing to do after.
Fabric care
Some washers come with programs that are specially for more delicate types of fabrics like wool and cotton. They make sure your clothes get a gentle clean, while still giving you amazing results. This means your favourite items will look amazing for years to come.
Energy-efficient
Most washing machines are kitted out with nifty, energy-efficient tech. This can include anything from eco washes that use lower temperatures to inverter motors that gradually wind the drum into a spin, using less power to get going. Some even let you reduce the number of rinses in a cycle, meaning you save water and energy at the same time. Double win.
Sustainably made
A sustainably made product is built with the environment in mind. Whether it’s handy programmes designed to use less water and shorten washing time, or efficient motors to make your machine last longer, brands care about reducing their impact on Mother Nature. Some manufacturers even use recyclable parts in their drums, meaning clean cardis and a clean conscience too. Win-win.
Machine clean
